History

In the system of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine one of the leading medical educational institutions is the Kharkiv Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education.

Kharkiv Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education was founded by order of the People’s Commissariat of Health of Ukraine dated November 10, 1923. At first, it was named: Kharkiv Clinical Institute for the Improvement of Physicians, later, since 1927 – Ukrainian Central Institute for the Improvement of Physicians.

The first director of the institute was Professor I.I. Finkelstein. Under his leadership, the following departments were organized: surgery (professor F. Yu. Rose), topographical anatomy and operative surgery (professor A.V. Melnikov), obstetrics and gynecology (professor A. M. Mamutov – obstetrics, Ye. G. Scherbyna – gynecology), therapy (professor A.N. Gekhtman), pediatrics (professor S. M. Yampolsky) and general and communal hygiene (head of the sanitary and economic sector of the People’s Commissariat of Health O. Marseev).

In the organization, growth and improvement of the Institute’s work, such prominent figures of national science participated: the actual members of the Academy of Medical Sciences, professors M. N. Soloviev, V. Zh. Zhdanov, E. A. Popov, Corresponding Member of the Academy of Medical Sciences N. P. Novachenko, professors MI Sytenko, O. Marseev, I. Braude, A. M. Krichevsky, F. Yu. Roze, I. I. Makletsov and many others.

At the beginning of 1928, the training was conducted in 13 specialties, in 1935-1936 – in 54 specialties.

In 1940, the Institute employed 180 teachers, including 30 professors. During the 1939-1940 period, 6062 doctors trained in retraining, during 1500-1940; and since the foundation of the institute until 1940 – 9825 doctors.

After the liberation of Ukraine from fascist invaders by the decision of the People’s Commissars of Ukraine of September 25, 1943, the institute resumed its activities. Despite the difficulties of the postwar period, the newly-formed collective only 1300 people were trained at the courses during the first year after the reconstruction.

At the beginning of 1948, the number of departments increased almost twice compared with 1944.

The complex of hostels for 1700 people was built. Under the direction and with the personal participation of the rector, professor M.I. Khvysyuk, one of the largest educational and clinical complexes in Ukraine was created.

In 1999, the institute was renamed the Kharkiv Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education. Further development of the academy was characterized by the organization of the College for the training of medical nurses – bachelors, the first in Ukraine faculty of management in health care and the faculty of general practice – family medicine.
