The history of the Luhansk National Taras Shevchenko University dates back to 1921, when provincial higher pedagogical courses were opened. The purpose of the courses was to train social workers for a network of children’s institutions. Subsequently, the courses were transferred to Enakievo, and in October 1922 – to Lugansk.
In 1923, on the basis of pedagogical courses, the first higher education institution in the Donbass was founded – Donetsk Institute of National Education (DINЕ). In the autumn of the same year, the first intake of students for the social education department was held. They were 56 guys, mostly workers and peasants. The faculty began training organizers of educational work for a single seven-year school of work, teachers for preschool and extra-school child care institutions and organizers of the children’s communist movement.
In 1927, the Faculty of Vocational Education was opened with a socio-economic, chemical, technical and mathematical, agrobiological department and a department of language and literature, and later, in 1930, became five independent faculties. Also, the institute opened an extramural department, which made it possible for students from the field to learn from on-the-job training.
In 1929, the institute moved to a new building, in which it is located to this day.
In 1931, an evening department was opened at the institute. In November 1931, a branch of the All-Ukrainian Institute of Advanced Training for Teachers began to function, where teachers with secondary education had the opportunity to receive higher education.
In 1934, the DINЕ was reorganized into the Lugansk State Pedagogical Institute and, in the period 1935–1940, he gave higher pedagogical education to 6.5 thousand young men and women.
April 26, 1939 By the decree of the Presidium of the Verkhovaya Rada of the Ukrainian SSR, the institute was named after the great poet and cultural figure Taras Shevchenko.
Training at the institute stopped only for the time of military actions on the territory of Voroshilovgrad. The institute was evacuated to the city of Engels, Saratov region.
In February 1943, after the liberation of Voroshilovgrad, the People’s Commissariat of Education of the Ukrainian SSR set forth the task of the earliest possible revival of the institute. The difficult task of restoration began with the repair of an almost completely destroyed academic building and the preparation of classrooms. During the fighting, laboratories, student dormitories, furniture, and library of the institute were destroyed (only 13 thousand books were saved from the fundamental library of the institute). Throughout the 1943/44 school year, hungry students comprehended science by listening to lectures while standing, and in the evening they stayed together to learn from the few surviving textbooks that were passed on as a great value.
But, contrary to all trials, in July 1945, the release of 288 young men and women took place.
POST-WAR TIME (1950–1990)
The post-war years were a period of rapid development of the institute: the educational and research base of the faculties was actively changing, primarily the physics and mathematics department: numerous laboratories were created, one of the few astronomical observatories in Ukraine; The base of the natural-geographical faculty grew rapidly.
The tireless work of teachers, staff and students in the years 1960-1963. unique geological and anatomical museums were created, at that time some of the best among similar museums in the higher educational institutions of Ukraine, the zoological museum was reequipped.
