The history of the Lviv Medical University dates back to 1661, when, on January 20, the privilege of King Jan Kazimierz, the Lviv Jesuit College was elevated to the rank of the Academy with the awarding of the University title consisting of four faculties. However, a full-fledged medical faculty until the closure of the University in 1773 was never formed.

In March 1900, the first issue of doctors in the number of 16 people was held, among them there were two Ukrainians – I. Polokhailo and Y. Grushkevich.
