History

The problem of training dental doctors in was particularly aggravated in the XIX century. Dental care was not provided to patients due to the lack of personnel, because they were not prepared in Russia (until 1881) or in Ukraine (until 1900). In this regard, the prominent surgeon of the time Sklyfosovsky at the VI Congress of Naturalists and Physicians was based on the proposal to prepare dental doctors with higher medical education at the medical faculties of universities. But only after the First World War, the decision on the training of medical personnel of dentistry, able to provide specialized assistance, began to acquire real features.

In the Kharkiv and Kiev medical and dental clinics of those years, it was suggested that qualified and specialized dental care for the population of Ukraine will be provided only by doctors who have chosen the profession of a dentist from the very beginning, from the first steps of training at dental faculties of medical institutes or medical dental institutes, where the term of study can be limited to four years.

On September 30, 1921, the Board of Ukrgolovprofos decided to establish an odontology faculty in the Kharkiv Medical Academy and to conduct appropriate organizational measures, as well as a set of students and scientific and pedagogical staff. On November 8, 1921, at the session of the small college of Ukrgolovprofos, a decision was taken to transform the Kharkiv Medical Academy into a medical institute with two faculties: medical and odontological. This historic decision laid the foundation for higher dental education in Ukraine, and dentistry was recognized as an integral part of clinical medicine.

The law of odontological department was inherited from 1931 by the Kharkov Dental Institute, from 1967 – by the Poltava Medical Stomatological Institute, and from 1994 – by the Ukrainian Medical Stomatological Academy. In its formation and development, the Ukrainian Medical Stomatological Academy has undergone a thorny path, which can be divided into six periods: the first since the foundation of the Odontological Faculty at the Kharkiv Medical Academy (1921-1931); the second – from the moment of transformation of the faculty into an independent Kharkov dental institute (1931 – 1941); the third is the period of evictions in the city of Frunze (Kyrgyz SSR) and its functioning as a faculty of the Kyrgyz Medical Institute (1941-1944); the fourth – reevacuation in the city of Kharkiv after his release from the Nazi invaders, restoration of training facilities and further development of scientific research (1944 – 1967); the fifth – the transfer to Poltava and its transformation into the Poltava Medical Dental Institute (1968 – 1993); the sixth – since 1994, from the transformation of the institute into the Ukrainian Medical Stomatological Academy.

The first period (1921 – 1931)

Sklyfosovsky In September 1921, at the first year of the Odontological Faculty of the Kharkiv Medical Academy, 250 people with secondary education began their studies. In the second course were enrolled 169 students who switched to the 2nd course of the dental school and during the summer holidays, they had a short course of medical and biological disciplines. At the faculty, 4 special departments of conservative dentistry with propedeutic odontology (headed by Professor Yu. M. Gofung), prosthetic dental treatment with orthodontics (headed by I. A. Baranov), operative dental treatment with maxillofacial orthopedics and separate oral cavity surgery and adjacent areas were created (Head – Professor M.B. Fabrikant). Theoretical and general clinical disciplines were studied at the corresponding departments of the institute. Kharkiv State Dental School became the profile of the faculty.

During the period of existence, the faculty has developed a capable, highly skilled, friendly team, which, along with the solution of educational tasks, made a significant contribution to the development of medical science. The staff of the faculty have created 13 manuals on dentistry and a large number of methodological aids for students. Among the teachers who worked in those years at the faculty, was known anatomist academician V. P. Vorobiev, author of outstanding works on the latest methods of embalming. It was he who was entrusted in 1924 with the embalming of the body of V.I. Lenin.

Summing up the first decade of existence of the faculty, it should be noted that he, together with the department of odontology, became the first specialized higher educational institutions for the preparation of dentists, methodological centers of dental education in Ukraine.

Second period (1931 – 1941)

The process of the formation and further development of the dental faculty, and then the institute, took place in very difficult conditions that developed in the country in the early 30’s. The economic difficulties experienced by the country, the search for ways out of them required measures for the health of people, expansion of the network of hospitals, sanatoriums, rest homes, dispensaries, dental clinics, etc. To solve these and other tasks could only be provided with more qualitative training of dental staff.

It was during this period, in August 1931, the dental faculty of the Kharkiv Medical Institute was reorganized into an independent Kharkiv Dental Institute with a 4-year term. There were created 3 special departments: surgical stomatology, therapeutic dentistry, orthopedic stomatology. Each department had its own training base. The Institute was staffed with highly skilled teaching staff. M.V. Nezhdanov was appointed director of the institute, and Professor Yu. M. Gofung was appointed as a deputy in the scientific and educational work. Almost all teachers at special departments had higher medical education.

From September 1931 to September 1941 the Institute trained 650 doctors, and only in 1921 – 913 dental doctors. In addition, more than 2,500 dental surgeons graduated from the correspondence department, externship and retraining courses; they got the qualification of dental practitioners.

Third period (1941 – 1944)

June 22, 1941 in the building on the Pushkinskaya St, 7 held a scientific conference. At 11 o’clock 45 minutes a break was made, during which it became known about the treacherous attack of fascist Germany on the Soviet Union. Anger and anger caused the teachers and students to report this. They understood what kind of trouble the people, the state, their homeland suffered.

On June 23, the Institute hosted the issue of dental specialists. Diplomas of a doctor-dentist were handed over to 180 students. 62 students were transferred to the second course, 132 for the third, 130 for the fourth. On the same day, the director of the institute G. A. Lichman issued an order requiring the release of all those who were eligible to call the Red Army, to replace them, to pay their wages, to take all their affairs and property from them. The order further required the reorganization of the groups in all courses, the drawing up of a schedule, the organization of training in accordance with the reduced plan of the People’s Commissariat of Health of the USSR in accordance with the special instruction. In the first period, the Kharkiv Dental Institute sent 45 people to the army: 27 teachers, 16 employees and 2 students.

Fourth period (June 1944 – May 1967)

This time in the history of the UMDA is characterized by the re-evacuation of the institute in Kharkiv, its formation and development in the postwar period. The Director of the Institute in July 1944 was appointed Professor P.V. Vlasenko – an experienced organizer, an outstanding scientist, biologist in education. The administration of the institute and some medical and biological departments were located in a 4-storey building on the street. Pushkin, 53. Anatomical departments were common for students of medical and dental institutes, based on the KMI. General clinical departments were located on the bases of city hospitals (children’s, 2nd Soviet and Ukrainian). Departments of ENT-diseases and eye diseases – on the basis of relevant research institutes, and skin-and-venereal diseases – based on the 4th skin and venereal dispensary.

In 1954, by decree of the USSR government, dental institutes were reorganized into dental faculties of medical universities, but two of them – Moscow and Kharkiv – were left with independent medical stomatological institutes. The main directions of scientific research of the Institute’s staff in post-war years in dentistry were the continuation of clinical and morphological and clinical-microbiological research of dental diseases and the development of methods for their treatment. During the same years, together with the therapists and dentists, the orthopedics-dentists contributed significantly to the development and improvement of methods for the complex treatment of periodontal diseases, injuries of the maxillofacial area and the restoration of defective dentition.

Materials of researches of the postwar period are generalized in doctoral and candidate dissertations. In those years, the foundations of the implementation of a number of doctoral and several dozen candidate dissertations were laid.
